ST. LOUIS, MO (WTAQ) – The postseason hopes for the Milwaukee Brewers finally came to an end on Saturday after a heartwrenching loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6.
Ryan Braun, Travis Shaw, and Domingo Santana all had big days at the plate in the first three innings, putting the Brewers up 6-0 by the end of their half of the third.
That’s when the pitching sputtered, as starter Junior Guerra allowed three runs in the third and was pulled for Jeremy Jeffress, who allowed another.
The bullpen kept the Cardinals at bay for a while, but the Cardinals comeback was kept alive by their own pitching staff.
Despite getting 13 hits through the game, five more than St. Louis, the Brew Crew would not send another man home after Cardinals starter Luke Weaver was pulled.
Things were still in hand heading into the bottom of the eighth, but rookie reliever Josh Hader and journeyman Anthony Swarzak combined to allow three hits and three runs.
Cards veteran Juan Nicasio, who’s bounced around between three teams this year, cleaned up his sixth save and ended the Brewers playoff dreams.
No matter the result on Sunday, the Brewers will finish 2017 with a winning record for the first time since the 2014 season, which also flamed out after a strong start.
The Brewers close out the 2017 season in St. Louis this afternoon.
