GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Stroke a fifth-leading cause of death in the United States…But the good news is that up to 80 percent of them are preventable.
Clinical Nurse Specialist at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital, Sarah Badalamenti, explains what happens in the brain during a stroke.
“It’s an interruption of blood flow to the brain typically either from a clot or a burst blood vessel in the brain that creates the neurological deficits,” said Badalamenti.
Knowing the “BE FAST” acronym can help identify stoke warning signs.
“B stands for Balance, E is for eye changes, F is for facial droop, A for arm weakness, S is for speech, and T is time and call 911,” Badalamenti said.
Risk factors of stroke include Diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
