MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – Two teenagers from Texas are suspected of hacking the Manitowoc Police Department’s Twitter account.
Last October, someone took over the @ManitowocPD account and sent out several inappropriate tweets under the police department’s name before it could be shut down.
The department recovered the account and began sending out legitimate tweets in November.
Police now say their investigation led them to two teens in Trophy Club, Texas.
Officials says the teens had also hacked other accounts and had used an illegal service to get the login credentials.
The teens’ motivation was financial.
Manitowoc police are asking prosecutors to charge the teens with disorderly conduct.
Police in Trophy Club continue to investigate the teens.
