Manitowoc, WI (WTAQ) – After watching the Netflix series “Making a Murderer”, Supporters of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are planning a protest in Manitowoc Friday .
Local law enforcement is bracing for what they’re hoping is a peaceful event . Manitowoc Police Captain Larry Zimney says he’s been in touch with the demonstrators….and they know the rules.
“the activists will have pretty much the grounds of the courthouse to do their demonstration”
He says the protestors have told him they’ll be respectful and not cause trouble, even if people who say Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are guilty in the murder of Teresa Hallbach show up as well. Up to 200 people expected.
“that’s what we’re planning for…through social media and other sources the number could go higher than that”
Protest Organizer Megan McGuniess is traveling to Manitowoc from Minnesota. She said after watching “Making a Murderer”…she wanted to take action.
“we wanted to peacefully protest and show our support for Steven and Brendan”
Zimney says the entire department will be on hand to make sure things go smoothly…but there are contingency plans in place if extra manpower is needed for some reason.
“with mutual aid agreements with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department, along with the PD in Two Rivers and Kiel. We also have State Patrol troopers in the area, if needed.
The protest is set to begin at 10, outside the Manitowoc County courthouse. There’s no word on how long the demonstration could last.
