WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) – A new report shows that Wisconsin’s low-income Pell Grant recipients have better success graduating from private colleges than public ones, but at a much higher cost.
The Education Trust compared graduation rates to see if the grants are a good deal for taxpayers.
It found that 51 percent of Pell Grant recipients graduate in six years, compared to 65 percent of those who don’t get the financial aid.
In Wisconsin, the report shows that Ripon and Beloit colleges have higher graduation rates for Pell Grant students than others. But despite the amounts of the grants, those students and their families still pay $15,000 to $20,000 a year, compared to around $9,000 for most UW schools.
On the other hand, the public graduation rates are lower. UW-Madison and Milwaukee both have 11 percent fewer Pell Grant recipients graduating, compared to those without the grants.
