MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – A Dane County resident lost $6,800 to a scam leading him to believe he would be arrested for owing back taxes.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said someone called the man claiming to be from the IRS, and warning him that he owed back taxes.
The following day, the man got a call from someone claiming to be a sergeant from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. The caller said several warrants were issued for his arrest, but that they would be waived if he paid the amount he owed.
Deputies said the man got $6,800 worth of prepaid credit cards, and provided the credit card numbers to the caller.
The Sheriff’s Office says there is no validity to these types of calls, and back taxes are not collected in this way.
Authorities are asking that people help to protect elderly relatives and neighbors by sharing this information with them, as they are often targets in these types of scams.
Anyone who receives these types of calls is asked to refer them to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.
