MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – GOP lawmakers will study the idea of merging Wisconsin’s 16 technical colleges with the UW’s 13 two-year colleges and Extension service.
A work group of five Assembly Republicans will hold a private meeting Wednesday to discuss the possibilities.
Assembly Colleges Committee chairman David Murphy has not seen a specific merger plan. Murphy, an Appleton area Republican, tells the Wisconsin State Journal that any realignment would have to save money. He cautions against acting too quickly, before the idea can be fully explored.
Colleges’ chancellor Cathy Sandeen says she’s against a merger, because the tech schools and the UW Colleges have vastly different goals.
Sandeen says tech schools prepare people for jobs, while the colleges are often a starting point for four-year university degrees.
