WAUPACA, WI (WTAQ) – A former treasurer in Waupaca County has pled no contest to a felony charge of theft for stealing over $10,000 from the community.
Ex-Little Wolf town treasurer Thomas Smith agreed to a plea deal where a charge of misconduct in office was dropped.
Officials say Smith embezzled money from the town since at least 2005. He resigned back in February.
Smith has paid back over $126,000, which includes the amount stolen along with 1.5 percent interest, expenses for an audit and bank research fees.
He faces up to 10 years in prison during sentencing on September 14. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend a sentence of no more than a year in jail and probation.
