MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Many Wisconsin drivers assume that they’re most likely to hit a deer in October and November, when hunting gets into high gear.
However, the month we’re now entering is also among the worst for car-deer crashes.
The state DOT says more deer are moving around in June, as females find places to give birth — and the young animals separate from their mothers. As a result, June was either the worst month or the second-worst for injuries from deer crashes in 4 of the last 5 years.
David Pabst of the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Safety says his best advice is to show down, stop talking on your cell phone, and eliminate distractions on the open road. He says many deer crashes cannot be avoided, and you’ll be safer if you buckle up.
Pabst says motorcyclists must especially be careful.
Ten people were killed in Wisconsin deer mishaps last year, and 8 of those 10 were motorcyclists.
All told, the Badger State had over 18,000 crashes in 2014 involving deer and motor vehicles.
