GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Road projects statewide are set to shut down for the holiday weekend at noon Friday.
But that doesn’t mean drivers won’t encounter delays in work zones.
The Department of Transportation’s Mark Kantola says “motorists should still allow for extra travel time and expect slower traffic in work zones along the major highway corridors.”
Kantola says people shouldn’t be surprised by the major projects in Northeast Wisconsin.
“I-43 in Brown County and in Manitowoc County. We have it reduced to a single lane in Brown County from Denmark to the 172 ramps in Green Bay. We also have 43 down to one lane in southern Manitowc County.”
He notes there are plenty of other major projects going on throughout Wisconsin, with the largest one being at the Milwaukee Zoo Interchange.
“Closures include the system ramp from I-94 westbound to the 894 southbound. Then there is some access restrictions on I-94 westbound.”
Kantola says a complete list of Wisconsin construction areas can be found at: https://projects.511wi.gov/.
Work is set to resume Tuesday morning.
Kantola reminds drivers that this is the first summer where it is illegal to use handheld devices in work zones.
He notes drivers will be fined if they are caught.
Unfortunately for travelers, Kantola does not expect things will be much better for the Fourth of July or Labor Day.
“Throughout the summer, you’re still going to be seeing quite a few traffic impacts on the major highways.”
AAA projects roughly 766,000 Wisconsinites will travel at least 50 miles from home during Memorial Day weekend.
