MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin lawmakers will find out Thursday how people feel about revoking the licenses of repeat drunk drivers for at least ten years.
The Assembly Judiciary Committee has scheduled a noon-hour public hearing at the State Capitol on the measure.
Right now, the DOT can revoke licenses of OWI convicts for up to a year. The new bill would permanently revoke the licenses of those with 5 or more drunk driving convictions — plus those with 3 or more OWI offenses and two related convictions for things like causing death or injury.
Those affected by the new penalties could ask the DOT to reinstate their licenses after 10 years.
Lawmakers of both parties support the bill.
Assembly Democrat Eric Genrich of Green Bay is the lead author. He and others say it cracks down on repeat drunk drivers without a lot of the extra expenses that previous bills required for things like longer jail and prison sentences.
