GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A major renovation costing major dollars will start early next year at the Green Bay Botanical Garden.
“I think it will bring the next generation out to the garden which is important,” said Kathy Hartman, co-chair of the Nature Nurture Capital Campaign.
The campaign will help expand the Nielsen Children’s Garden from a half acre to 2.5 acres.
Some additions include a raindrop garden, Lily Pad Splash Play, Wetland Deck and Woodland play area.
“Construction will finish all of the plans this year and we will start construction in 2022 and a grand opening will happen in 2023,” said Hartman.
Green Bay Botanical Garden estimates the project will cost $11.5 million.
$9.5 million has already been raised from donations and grants.
“Majority of the money is construction but there is a portion that will go into the endowment for the future,” said Hartman.
Executive Director, Susan Garot says the Children’s Garden is worth the investment, “We hope to attract thousands and thousands of children to come out here. Right now we have about 6 thousands children coming out for our education programing. We’d love to see that double or more.”
Garot says the space will play a key part in youth, family programs and summer camps.
With that, she says a new educator and horticulturist will be needed.
“It’s really important we give children an opportunity to learn and grow in nature and it really is the healthiest way for our children to learn and grow,” said Garot.
Hartman and Garot say they look forward to seeing families enjoy the new space for generations to come.
The public is invited to donate to the project’s Nature Nurtures Campaign.
Work is expected to start in 2022.
