MADISON, WI (WHBL) — As public health officials conduct contact tracing to keep tabs on the spread of COVID-19, scammers are finding ways to use that to steal your personal information.
According to the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin, scammers are sending unsolicited messages via text, email or social messenger claiming that you’ve come into contact with someone who’s tested positive for COVID-19. It tells you to self isolate, and provides a link for more information. That link can put malware on your device and get your personal data. Another version uses robocalls that get you to speak to a so-called “contact tracer” who wants to verify your personal information.
The BBB advises that legitimate contact tracers will only confirm your name, address, and date of birth and might ask about your health, medical history and recent travel. BUT, they’ll never ask for government ID like Social Security or financial information. If questions go beyond the basics, the BBB says stop right there.
