FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Mihai-Alexandru Preda was sentenced to four years in prison for ‘skimming’ credit cards.
Previously, his partner, Catalin-Adrian Capanu, was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in the scheme.
Preda was also placed on extended supervision for four years at the Friday sentencing, court records show.
The two were arrested on June 10, 2018 after a report of suspicious behavior at an ATM. A witness saw the two repeatedly using an ATM, and acting nervously. He called police, who arrived shortly afterwards.
Police found 137 forged or cloned credit cards and about $7,500 in cash. The criminal complaint does not say where the cards came from. Capanu said they repeatedly used the cards at the two Marine Credit Union locations on Wisconsin American Drive and Rees St.
Fond du Lac police said the U.S. Secret Service believes the suspects are part of a nationwide Romanian organized crime ring targeting local areas by stealing credit and debit card information by using skimming devices.
