MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – It will take a little longer for attorneys to agree on a trial date for a man accused of a double murder in Marinette County in 1976.
82-year-old Raymond Vannieuwenhoven pleaded not guilty to the murders of David Schuldes and Ellen Mathys.
Vannieuwenhoven previously pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of at McClintock Park.
Judge James Morrison suggested setting a trial date, but the attorneys preferred to wait until after the next motions hearing which is now set for Feb. 20 according to court records.
The murders of Schuldes and Matheys were unsolved for more than four decades. Last year, a DNA sample from evidence at the crime scene was determined to be from a particular family. After samples tested from Vannieuwenhoven’s brothers weren’t a match, a sample from him – obtained from a licked envelope for a survey on police performance filled out by Raymand, according to the complaint.
