WAUPACA, WI (WTAQ) – A pair of men arrested in connection with the death of a man from a homemade explosive are expected in Waupaca County Court on Wednesday.
37-year-old Robert Mattes and 42-year-old Kenneth Niemer were arrested Sunday after a piece of shrapnel hit a 44-year-old man from Illinois, who died.
The homemade explosive device did not ignite properly and exploded when the device’s metal tubing failed, according to deputies.
Both were arrested on potential charges of homicide by negligent handling of dangerous weapons, explosives, or fire.
No formal charges have been issued at this time.
Additionally, the victim’s name has not been released.
