GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The man allegedly responsible for stabbing and injuring Green Bay K9 officer Pyro is being charged and is expected to appear in court Wednesday.
30-year-old Sai Vang has been charged with three counts, including a felony charge of causing injury to a police animal, and misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and resisting.
Police responded to a residence on Western Avenue after receiving a call from Vang saying that he was going to shoot his dad with a 9mm handgun, according to the criminal complaint.
Upon arrival, Vang threatened to shoot the officers and they were alerted that he is schizophrenic.
As officers approached it appeared that Vang had a knife to his neck, but it was later determined to be a cell phone.
Pyro engaged Vang after he refused commands to surrender.
Vang pulled a knife out of his waistband and stabbed Pyro after he was bitten.
According to the complaint, an officer then used a taser on Vang and he was taken into custody.
The complaint states that during questioning Vang repeatedly apologized for stabbing Pyro, but said: “he stabbed the dog on instinct, because he is scared of dogs.”
Pyro continues to recover following surgery on Monday, which worked to repair a flipped stomach and a blood clot that kept the dog from breathing properly.
A fundraiser for the K9 dog is being held Thursday at Bark and Brew.
