GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin elected officials are weighing in on Senator John McCain.
Congressman Mike Gallagher says the late senator is a man did his job for his country.
“Regardless of what you think about McCain’s policies here and there, this is a man who loved America and served his country honorably.”
McCain died Saturday at age 81 following a battle with brain cancer.
Gallagher says he has a lot of respect for McCain’s overall dedication to the country as a Veteran and POW.
“I just think he cast a large shadow and my hope is that events like this will remind us of how we are supposed to conduct ourselves in public office.”
He says people in public office should try to conduct themselves with more dignity, integrity and more charity in his honor.
Congressman Mike Gallagher says he had a defining moment with the late Senator while he was visiting Vietnam.
“He was there at the same time and he gave us a tour of where he was in prison and tortured for five years. That was one of the most profound experiences of my life.”
Congressman Gallagher says paying respect comes down to more than lowering flags or sending tweets.
He made his comments while touring Fox Valley Metal Tech in Green Bay on Monday.
