GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — When you see a bicycle from the 1970s, most would consider it an antique.
But one man in our community saw it as an opportunity to make a difference.
“So, the bike itself is a 1970s Huffy Rawhide. It came to me with quite a bit of rust on it, some purple wheels. Obviously, not the Packer colors that we see now,” said Skyler Palmer, the man restoring the bike.
Palmer works security for Emplify Health by Bellin and is living with Crohn’s disease. He wants to help others who are battling a chronic illness.
“I grew up with Crohn’s disease. I was diagnosed when I was eight. So, in and out of the hospital dealing with the struggles of that, and with the Packers season coming around, I just wanted to make a bike and donate it back to a family,” said Palmer.
Palmer’s goal with this project is to partner with the Packers to get signatures on the bike. He mentioned names like Jordan Love, Micah Parsons, Matthew Golden and Matt LaFleur.
“All of our Packers are great, everyone is awesome. So, we’ll take who we can get,” said Palmer.
After that, Palmer wants to raffle it off and donate the proceeds to a family being treated by Emplify Health by Bellin.
“They already have enough stress that their young one is in the hospital and Christmas is coming. So, you know, there are many other things that they should be focused on rather than maybe some medical bills,” said Palmer.
According to Palmer, he’s worked for more than 20 hours and spent over $300 on the bike so far. Why does he do it?
“I’ve always felt the need to give back. I kind of always wanted to go the military/public safety route, and with my Crohn’s, it makes it a little tough to be so active in those days where I’m in a flare up. So, I guess this is one of those ways I’m finding I can give back to my community,” said Palmer.
Palmer says he’d love to create a partnership with the Packers and continue to do this in the future, but for now, he’s focused on getting this one bike raffled off for a family before the holiday season.
