BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Town of Holland is challenging Brown County’s plans for placing contaminated soils at the southern landfill.
According to the town, Brown County plans to use contaminated soils at the landfill for “for so-called “beneficial” purposes at the Brown County South Landfill.”
The town is upset with plans, as well as what it claims is the county’s lack of intent to pay the town “tipping fees” for the disposal.
Because a “notice of claim” has been filed with the county – the first step towards a potential lawsuit – the county is not commenting on Holland’s actions.
The town has also asked the DNR for a public hearing on the issue.
“The Landfill’s request is generating considerable interest at the local level, and there are residents who wish to be heard. It remains critically important to give the public a meaningful opportunity to provide input on this request. We restate our previous request that the Department hold a public hearing on this matter,” the town’s letter to the DNR states.
The landfill, 1258 Mill Road, opened in 2022. It serves Brown, Outagamie, and Winnebago counties as part of a tri-county agreement.
