HOBART, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The village of Hobart is looking to build a new municipal center by 2028.
The new center would house the village offices, police department and eventually the public works department.
The plan for Hobart’s new municipal center is to go just about two miles down the road from their current location. Right now, they’re located at 2990 S Pine Tree Rd. They hope to move to a property currently owned by a construction on West Adam Drive.
“The space that we operate out of is, what the staff has done here is nothing short of miraculous,” Hobart Village Administrator Aaron Kramer said.
Not only does this building house all village offices, it also contains the police department, consisting of just a 400 square foot room.
Now the village wants to move its offices, the police department and public works to land currently owned by Joe DeNoble Sewer and Water Construction, who would simply move their business next door.
Instead of just one small building, the village would have eight acres with four larger buildings.
“That would meet all of our space needs not just today but 10, 20, probably even 30 years down the road and allow us to consolidate most if not all of our operations,” Kramer said.
The village would buy the property for $6.2 million and spend about $4 million on building costs.
Kramer said over the past nine years, Hobart’s population has grown by nearly 4,000 people.
Hobart Police also serves the Town of Lawrence, meaning they’re responsible for about 20,000 residents.
“Our Police Department has evidence stored in secure locations all throughout the area, which is absolutely not how a modern police department should operate,” Kramer said.
Kramer said moving somewhere new is all about improving working conditions.
The village plans to use the new site’s existing buildings, mixed with some new construction.
The fate of this project will be voted on at the village board meeting on Sept. 16. Construction is expected to begin in 2028.
The project will be completed in different phases starting with the police department, followed by the village offices and finally the department of public works.
