MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — During a statewide campaign to curb drinking and driving around the Labor Day holiday, Manitowoc police say they made 13 arrests for OWI.
The Manitowoc Police Department took part in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign.
This campaign spanned from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1.
During this period, police say they typically see an increase in drunk-driving deaths.
From Aug. 15 through Sept. 1, Manitowoc police say they had 34 patrol officers dedicate a total of 376.5 hours of traffic enforcement, resulting in 315 traffic stops, 251 written warnings and 70 traffic citations being issued. Furthermore, 13 arrests were made for OWI during the campaign.
Police say drivers should keep the following things in mind year-round:
- Have a Plan Whether You’re Driving, Riding or Hosting
- Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.
- Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking.
- If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.
- If you see an impaired driver, call 911. And always wear your seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.
