MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Weather is delaying a historic submarine’s trip from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay for maintenance.
The USS Cobia was scheduled to be towed 55 nautical miles north to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay on Thursday where it will be cleaned, inspected, replated and repainted.
As of Wednesday, wind speeds are around 13 knots or 15 mph with gusts reaching up to 19 knots or 23 mph. This makes it unsafe for the USS Cobia and the crew onboard.
Initially Friday was considered a backup date but it appears the waters will not be calm enough by then.
Once a new date is confirmed, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum will notify the public on its website and social media channels.
