BRASILIA (Reuters) -A lawyer for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday that his client had his right of defense restricted in the case in which he is accused of plotting a coup after his 2022 electoral defeat.
Lawyer Celso Vilardi presented his arguments to a Supreme Court session as Bolsonaro’s landmark trial reaches its final phase. He added that there was no evidence the former right-wing leader acted against the democratic rule of law.
“We did not have access to the evidence, and much less had enough time to go through it,” Vilardi said, complaining that the court had fast-tracked proceedings.
