PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two police officers shot and killed a person armed with a sharp-edged weapon, state investigators say.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, just after 9 a.m., an officer in Marinette spotted a vehicle related to a suspicious death investigation in Dane County. The officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver sped off, heading south on Highway 41.
A high-speed chase ended with the vehicle crashing near the intersection of Highway 41 and Schacht Road in the town of Peshtigo.
When the suspect got out of the vehicle and approached officers, a Marinette County sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect with a Taser, but that was ineffective. At that point, two Marinette police officers shot the suspect.
Officers on the scene gave first aid, and the suspect was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The sharp-edged weapon was found at the scene.
No officers were injured.
The two Marinette police officers are on administrative leave, following department policy. One officer had a body camera, and both officers’ squad cameras were activated.
The state Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
State law requires that an outside agency investigate whenever a law enforcement officer uses deadly force.
Meanwhile, Highway 41 was shut down in the area and traffic was being routed through Peshtigo.
