Donation at Community Blood Center on August 29, 2016. PC: Fox 11 Online
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Community Blood Center is urging eligible donors of all types to schedule an appointment soon as supply is critically low.
Type O negative and positive blood remain critically low as many trauma patients continue to rely on the blood type.
In addition, Type A negative has been critically low for more than a week after multiple emergencies at local hospitals in Appleton, Green Bay and Iron Mountain.
While the need for blood is constant, the current Code Red situation is unique in its duration and number of blood types affected at the same time. The upcoming Labor Day holiday adds to the urgency. Donation appointments often decrease around holiday weekends as donors go out of town on fun trips and spend valuable time with family. At the same time, the need for blood has the potential to increase with higher travel and activity. Donating ahead of Labor Day guarantees blood is available ahead of the busy weekend.
While Type A and Type O blood are in critical need, all blood types are essential. Every donation strengthens the supply, ensuring patients have the blood they need for routine surgeries, cancer treatments, childbirth complications and life-threatening emergencies.
You can book an appointment by visiting communityblood.org, using the CBC Donor App or calling (800) 280-4102.
