NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A warehouse at the edge of downtown Neenah will soon be vacated, and the city hopes to purchase the site for $2.2 million and develop it.
“This is a great chance for us to really make a change here and do something positive,” said Neenah Mayor Jane Lang.
The warehouse will soon be vacant. Once the site of an old paper mill, the city says it’s been eyeing the site for over 20 years. It would give them about three acres to develop.
It’s next to the Solaris Place apartments and Arrowhead Park. As for the details, expect more apartments and some retail space.
“Having multi-family is very important,” said Neenah Director of Community Development and Assessment Kelly Nieforth. “It’s the highest and best use to have high density in those areas.”
Of course, prime real estate comes at a cost — $2.2 million to be exact.
“We believe over time, it will be an investment that will create a vibrancy in our downtown,” said Nieforth. “That the value of that will be greater than what we paid for the property.”
The project would be part of the 2026 budget, using capital improvement project funds. They would recoup the costs with the developer and increased economic activity repaying the city over time — a worthwhile investment according to the city.
“We think our downtown is exceptional,” said Lang. “We’d like to continue that trend and move it forward in a way that’s positive for us.”
A lot is still left to be ironed out, but here’s the timeline.
- Sept. 8: Neenah Finance & Personnel Committee vote
- Sept. 17: Neenah City Council votes
- Fall 2025: Developers begin assessing site
- 2026: Development begins (if city approves)
