GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A mistrial was declared Monday at the trial in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estate of a man who committed suicide in the Calumet County Jail.
Demetrius Stephenson died in August 2019. The lawsuit contends the county was aware of his mental illness and suicidal thoughts, but did not react appropriately.
Deliberations started last week and continued Monday. But with the eight-person jury unable to reach a unanimous verdict, a mistrial was declared by Judge William Griesbach.
No additional hearing dates have been set, according to a court official.
