MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A moment of silence was held at the Manitowoc Common Council meeting Monday evening in honor of a longtime alderman who died last week.
James “Jim” Brey, 58, was killed Aug. 12 when he crashed his vehicle into a building in the area of S. 26th Street and Franklin Street in Manitowoc. The cause of the crash has not yet been released.
According to his obituary, Brey was devoted to public service and improving his community. He served on the common council since 1992 and was elected to the Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors in 1996 — a position he held until last month, when he resigned and was appointed Manitowoc County treasurer.
“We come before you today with heavy hearts as we remember and honor our friend and colleague, Alderman Jim Brey,” said Manitowoc Common Council President Mike Cummings during an invocation at Monday’s meeting. “For more than three decades, he faithfully served the people of District 4 with dedication, integrity and compassion. We are grateful for the years we shared with him — for his wisdom, his leadership and his unwavering commitment to this community.”
We ask that you comfort his family, friends and all who mourn his passing. May we, as a council, honor his legacy by serving with the same dedication and heart that he brought to this chamber for so many years. Rest in peace, Alder Brey, as you shine down on us from the council in heaven.
Brey’s council term was set to last until April 2026.
