SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The 13-year-old Sheboygan boy who drowned earlier this week at Jaycee Quarry Park was swimming in a non-designated area, police said in an update Thursday.
Preliminary investigation revealed the teen was with a group of acquaintances when the drowning occurred Tuesday afternoon. Although police continue to investigate the circumstances around the boy’s death, there is no indication of foul play.
“At this time all available information supports that this was a tragic and heartbreaking accident,” the Sheboygan Police Department said in a news release.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the young individual who lost his life. This is a loss that touches the entire community. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the agencies that responded quickly to the scene and to the many members of our community who have shown support and compassion during this difficult time.
Officials are reminding the community that swimming at the Sheboygan Quarry is only permitted in designated areas during regular business hours. In some parts of the quarry, water is 30-50 feet deep.
According to the release, “false and misleading information” has been circulating on social media in the aftermath of the drowning, leading to “the exchange of threats among community members online.”
So far, one of those threats has resulted in an arrest.
“We urge everyone to use caution and responsibility when sharing information online. Please verify facts before reposting and remember that speculation and rumors only cause further harm to those already grieving,” police said.
