GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Development plans are beginning to take shape at the former Georgia-Pacific mill site on Day Street.
“We’re hoping that with this local developer, we’re going to be able to move forward with a plan that continues to breathe life into some of those industrial manufacturing buildings,” said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich. “This is a key development site for the city of Green Bay for downtown benefit.”
The Green Bay Common Council agreed Tuesday to a memorandum of understanding with the developer, meaning they’ll collaborate with the developer on a plan for the Day Street site.
The developer is Scout Development, LLC — which is part of McDonald Properties. Developer Chip McDonald said they look forward to working with the city and Georgia-Pacific, who owns the site. McDonald has the option to purchase the site from Georgia-Pacific.
Georgia-Pacific says they’ll be involved, but leave most of the planning up to the city and McDonald.
“Really what we want to try to do is make sure that whatever end result is beneficial for the seller, the buyer and the city in general,” said Chris Brennan, public affairs manager for Georgia-Pacific Green Bay.
The council considered rezoning the land for downtown-style development. Instead, they’ll take that up again in November, when the full redevelopment plan is expected to be completed.
“We recognize the fact that those facilities are still of high value for industrial purposes,” said Genrich. “We don’t want to stand in the way of that utilization, but we want to make sure that whatever happens on that Georgia-Pacific site, it’s conducive to future development up and down the river.”
The site has been vacant since Georgia-Pacific closed the mill in 2023 after 122 years.
