APPLETON, WI (WLUK) — The Appleton Fire Department responded to multiple dumpster fires across the city overnight following an evening of 4th of July celebrations.
Appleton fire officials say they were caused by leftover fireworks that hadn’t been properly disposed of.
“One fire extended to a structure, causing exterior damage”, the Appleton Fire Department said in a statement.
“The NFPA National Fire Protection Association recommends soaking used or unused fireworks in water for a period of time (ideally overnight) before disposal to prevent trash fires and potential hazards. After soaking, they should be wrapped in plastic bags (ideally two) and placed in the regular trash.”
The Appleton Fire Department also recommends that homeowners invest in insurance as a cost-effective way to get re-established in the event of a fire.
