GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — $20 million will be included in the state budget to complete the full Port of Green Bay expansion project at the mouth of the Fox River, according to two area Republican lawmakers.
The project at the former Pulliam Power Plant site involves the relocation of the downtown Green Bay coal piles, which general terms were agreed to in early June.
The $20 million would put the total money accumulated for the port expansion project in the range of $53 to $54 million, according to Brown County officials.
The plans were to be phased into two parts as the cost of the project increased and additional money was needed.
The expansion plans include constructing a new dock wall, dredging part of the Fox River to allow ships access to the new site, construction of a stormwater detention basin, and installation of mooring features.
The coal piles will be relocated to the Fox River Terminal, which is near the new port expansion project. Salt from the Fox River Terminal will be relocated to the former Pulliam site.
State Sen. Eric Wimberger, (R-Oconto), released the following statement:
With the Finance Committee’s action’s today, Brown County and Northeast Wisconsin will finally be able to expand its port and take major shipping for generations. The Port’s dilapidated condition and absence of a Southern Bridge were two main hobbling injuries to the region, and we are thrilled to be able to provide the investments that will chart a course for economic growth in the area for decades. Representative Ben Franklin was an amazing advocate for the Green Bay area, and without his help this project would not have been possible.
State Rep. Ben Franklin, (R-De Pere) released the following statement:
The Port of Green Bay is a critical piece of Northeast Wisconsin’s infrastructure that has been long-neglected. The Joint Finance Committee’s action today will complete the Port’s development, and set Northeast Wisconsin up to accept major shipping for generations, creating new opportunities for the industries and businesses that make up the backbone of our communities. This is a great day for Northeast Wisconsin.
