(WLUK) — President Donald Trump’s decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities is drawing mixed reaction from Wisconsin lawmakers in Washington, D.C.
“President Trump’s bombing of Iran without Congress’s approval ignores the Constitution, is putting our men and women in uniform at grave risk, and puts us on the verge of an all-out war,” said U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) in a statement.
Baldwin says Trump owes the American people answers as to “why he thinks he can flout the law and what the path forward is to find a peaceful solution.”
U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) said he supports the President’s decision and shared his thoughts on “Sunday Morning Features” on Fox News, saying the United States could not let Iran become a nuclear power.
“They were getting too close. They simply would not listen to (Trump). They wouldn’t give it up,” said Johnson about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We could not allow them to do so , so I could support President Trump’s actions in this case.”
Johnson indicated he understood why Trump did not share information ahead of the attack. Johnson said operational security was crucial to protect American servicemen and women.
Eighth District Congressman Tony Wied, (R-WI) reacted on ‘X’ posting: “Now is the time for peace and an end to endless wars. Let’s pray for our country. Peace through strength.”
Wisconsin’s senators also each addressed what comes next, while Iranian officials were promising retaliation against the United States.
“Hopefully, this is a new day dawning in terms of peace in the Middle East,” said Johnson.
“Diplomacy, not war, is the answer here. I stand with the people of Wisconsin who do not want to get into another war in the Middle East and put service members at risk,” said Baldwin.
