GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — School is officially out for summer in our area.
Children may be free from school for the summer, but their need healthy meals continues.
Wednesday, the Green Bay Area Public School District kicked off its Summer Meals Program at Joannes Park.
The Director of Food Services for Green Bay Area Public Schools Lynette Kiehnau said, “These meals are free to all students who are 18 years or under. We want them to enjoy our city, enjoy all of our playgrounds that we have here, and enjoy the opportunities at our pavilions with our Parkees.”
The federally funded program uses the school district as a vehicle to distribute meals to surrounding parks.
Kiehnau said, “They are put together in our production kitchen, packed, make sure that the quality insurance is all being followed…”
Washington Middle School student MarNashia Gonzalez said “They would have fruits, vegetables, milk, ranch- stuff that is healthy that we can eat but also colder meals because it is hot outside so it is refreshing”
No sign ups, or income checks are needed — just easy access to free meals.
“I mean, who wouldn’t want to have their kids go to a park and get lunch, and you don’t have to worry about them getting a very nutritious, quality meal that fits all of the food groups. You are getting your protein, you are getting your grains, your fruit, your vegetable and your dairy. And we also look our for kids with allergies too,” said Kiehnau.
Mayor Eric Genrich said “a lot of these federal programs are being debated these days, and we want to make sure a program like this is preserved and protected because it is such a lifeline for so many kids and families within the community.”
The summer meal program in the Green Bay community will run through August 15th.
