STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A community art project is taking to the streets in Door County.
This year’s theme is called “Set Sail in Sturgeon Bay.”
At the intersection of Third Avenue and Michigan Street sits what Judy Flores calls a Sturgeon Bay original.
“The one on the corner is a piece called Cherry on Top. My fiancé, Paul Haan, he is the artist in that case. His is more of a canvas piece. It’s very true to his art form, which is photography,” said Flores with DoorCo Photo Gallery.
The cherry-blossomed ship is one of 26 on display throughout downtown.
“We are celebrating our 25th anniversary of public street art in Sturgeon Bay. We’re super excited to celebrate in a big way. We have sails this year, which are six feet, and the artists did a great job of decorating both sails as their canvas backdrop,” said Cameryn Ehlers-Kwaterski, Destination Sturgeon Bay’s executive director.
Ehlers-Kwaterski says the sail theme ties in with the return of the Tall Ships, scheduled to arrive at the end of July. She says the smaller ships are available.
“The auction is live right now, so people can bid on their favorite piece. Another cool aspect of this project is 50% of the proceeds from the auction sale go directly back to the artist. Another 50% is retained by Destination Sturgeon Bay, and we put that directly back into the street art project, as well as our city-scaping project. So our flower pots. our banners and all of the things that make Sturgeon Bay beautiful,” she said.
Promoting art and the city, one piece at a time.
“It makes it fun. Then you start to learn more about these artists, and then you want to go to them and see what other types of pieces they might have that might pique your interest,” said Flores.
The online auction is open until Sept. 20.
