KIEL, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Working smoke alarms helped three people who were asleep get out of a duplex fire in Kiel.
Just before 2:30 a.m. Friday, crews were called to the 900 block of 6th Street for a report of a stove fire that was spreading to the kitchen cabinets.
When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the building. Crews learned all three occupants in the lower unit had evacuated safety. Firefighters assisted in evacuating residents from the upstairs unit.
Using a water-based extinguisher, the fire was deemed under control within three minutes. Crews secured the area and ventilated the home to eliminate lingering smoke.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature, resulting from the stovetop being left on and combustible items being left on or near the stovetop.
There were no injuries to the home’s occupants or responding personnel.
The preliminary damage estimate is $25,000.
The Kiel Fire Department reminds everyone of the importance of installing working smoke detectors and regularly checking them to ensure proper operation.
