KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Heart of the Valley has reached a milestone in their sewerage rehabilitation project.
Six new, state-of-the-art filters from Sweden were successfully integrated into the existing systems at the Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District’s treatment plant, as part of their effluent disc filter project.
A media tour and open house were held Tuesday to share the update with the community.
“We’re here today to celebrate the finality on our filter project. It’s been a long time coming. A number of years of planning, engineering, design, bidding and finally, we got to the construction phase. We finished that construction phase late last year, and now, we’re reading to show off the hard work that we’ve done and the filters themselves,” said HOVMSD District Director Brian Helminger.
Officials say these filters enable HOVMSD to meet evolving Wisconsin DNR standards established to safeguard natural water resources.
The filters remove additional suspended solids and phosphorus from treated wastewater, and the disc filters’ woven cloth panels capture and hold additional solids until the filter backwashes and returns them to the head of the plant for processing.
“The additional phosphorus removal protects the environment,” Helminger said. “And then the suspended solids themselves would have a tendency to strip dissolved oxygen from the Fox River, and so we want to limit that to the extent practical and certainly meet all of our obligations with the DNR.”
This project was funded with a loan from the Clean Water Fund.
