(WTAQ-WLUK) – The Wisconsin Supreme Court denied Steven Avery’s latest bid for a new trial for his conviction for the murder of Teresa Halbach.
Avery, 62, is serving a life sentence for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, a freelance photographer. Avery has maintained his innocence, but every appeal, to this point, has been denied.
Avery’s latest appeal centered on claims he should be allowed to present evidence there is an alternate suspect actually responsible for the murder. After the motion was denied by the circuit court and appeals court, Avery turned to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
The one-sentence order states “IT IS ORDERED that the petition for review is denied, without costs.”
In a social media post, Avery’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner said “As expected the Wisconsin Supreme Court has denied review of Steven’s petition.
Zellner makes no mention of possible next steps.
Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, was also convicted. Dassey’s appeals have all been rejected, and he has none pending.
Their cases received worldwide attention with the 2015 release of the Netflix series “Making A Murderer.”
