MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Michael Galbraith was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison for the traffic crash that killed an 8-month-old girl.
Galbraith, 47, previously pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle for the Oct. 6, 2023 crash.
He was also placed on extended supervision for five years by Judge Peggy Miller, court records show.
The sentence on a count of operating a motor vehicle with use of a controlled substance will run concurrent to the prison term.
Galbraith pulled out from a stop sign on Kamm Road at U.S. 41, striking another vehicle. The child died a few days after the crash. He said he stopped for the stop sign, but didn’t see the vehicle coming.
A blood draw was performed, and the tests showed Galbraith tested positive for the chemicals in marijuana. In Wisconsin, motorists can have alcohol in their system up to a certain point and still operate legally. However, no such allowable limits exist for other illegal drugs, and any detectable amounts can result in charges. However, the felony count associated with the drug use was changed as part of the plea deal.
