Construction of NFL Draft Theater hits milestone as stage’s roof is raised

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As the countdown to the NFL Draft continues, construction of the draft theater hit a major milestone with the raising of the stage’s roof.

The landscape around Lambeau Field is changing daily as the draft footprint comes to life. On Wednesday, the roof of the stage started making its way to the top.

“It’s 2D plans, and then it’s 3D plans, and then you look behind us here and it’s starting to come to life. It’s pretty incredible, pretty exciting. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime event to be a part of,” said Nick Meisner, Discover Green Bay’s vice president of digital marketing and communications.

The theater where the top draft choices will walk across the stage, shake NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s hand and pose for photos with their new team’s jersey is being constructed in Lambeau Field’s eastern parking lot.

According to Gabrielle Dow, the Packers’ vice president of marketing and fan engagement, “This theater is where Roger [Goodell] makes the picks and the prospects walk across the stage — and we see greats walk, legends will be here. And it’s just a really neat experience.”

It’s quite the undertaking, as well. Construction crews began building the stage after closing a stretch of Oneida Street across from Lambeau Field on March 29.Hundreds of workers — many from outside the area — that travel with the NFL to help set up events like the draft are working daily to set the scene.

Milestones continue to be met as Titletown prepares to host up to a quarter of a million people throughout the three-day event.

According to Dow, “All of the timelines are being hit. The Packers and Discover Green Bay and PMI, all behind the scenes, have formed our local organizing committee, which we call our LOC, and they have been in lock step with the NFL and their partners, C3 and OneTeam. We’re kind of the plate spinners. We just make sure nothing falls through the cracks.”

In addition to the theater build, work is progressing on sponsor and hospitality areas. Media row will start to go up soon, too. And over the next week and a half, the NFL Experience area will also be completed.

While Green Bay is the host city for the NFL Draft, and it’s clear the big event will be here soon, the benefits will be felt far beyond.

“This is our Super Bowl. This is the biggest NFL event we’ll be able to host, but for the state of Wisconsin, it’s equally as big,” added Meisner.

The draft runs from April 24-26.
