Little Chute officials estimate 90 dead ducks were found dead at Buchanan Pond; the mortalities appear to be connected to bird flu, Feb. 26, 2025. PC: Fox 11 Online
LITTLE CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Nearly 100 dead ducks have been pulled from a storm pond property in Little Chute.
It is believed the mass mortality event is associated with Avian Influenza A (H5N1) — more commonly known as bird flu. Bird species across Outagamie County are being impacted.
Little Chute says it is addressing “the removal and disposal of waterfowl carcasses” from the village’s storm water detention pond, called Buchanan Pond, located at the northwest corner of Highway OO and Buchanan Street.
Kent Taylor, director of public works, says an estimated 90 ducks were removed by crews wearing protective gear and then taken to the landfill.
The village says it is working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to confirm the deaths are connected to bird flu. Six ducks are being tested by the DNR, but signs point to bird flu.
Little Chute officials first heard about the duck mortalities on social media Wednesday morning.
Bird flu has already hit Northeast Wisconsin; in late 2024, there were dozens of dead geese found at Howard’s Duck Creek Quarry.
