GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The city of Green Bay says it finished installing 48 new crosswalk beacons that aim to cut pedestrian crashes and empower safe walking and biking.
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) with high visibility crosswalks have been proven to reduce crashes by up to 47% and increase motorist yielding rates by up to 98%.
The project was completed with the city’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and November 2022 referendum dollars from the Green Bay Area Public School District.
“The people of Green Bay want and deserve safe streets,” said Mayor Eric Genrich. “These enhanced crosswalks improve pedestrian safety and driver awareness, and I’m grateful to city staff, our Common Council, and GBAPS leadership for making this plan a reality.”
The 48 locations throughout the city were selected based on proximity to schools, crash data, roadway information, and community feedback.

Phase two of implementation will involve the completion of several more enhanced crosswalks, as well as the installation of speed feedback signs in and around school zones within the community.
