OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — The middle and high schools in the Oshkosh Area School District are now equipped with overdose aid kits; or OAK boxes.
The kits contain Narcan; a lifesaving nasal medication that reverses the deadly effects of an opioid overdose.
Matt Kaemmerer, Director of Pupil Services for the district, says they haven’t seen any instances of middle or high school students overdosing, and the kits are there for the broader community.
“We have sporting events in our building that brings in parents and others from the community,” said Kaemmerer. “Also the community is able to rent out parts of our buildings for various events.”
He added that students may know somebody who uses drugs, and this allows them access to Narcan should they need it outside of school in the event of an emergency.
The district has held training sessions with school staff about the OAK boxes and how to use Narcan; students were also shown an informative video.
The Clinton Foundation helped sponsor the boxes.
