GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Shipments of salt, limestone and petroleum products decreased in 2024, while cement and coal tonnage increased at the Port of Green Bay.
With the shipping season officially closed, the port released its final numbers Friday.
A total of 181 vessels hauled nearly 1.7 million tons of cargo during the season. While the number of ships increased by 10 from the 2023 season, tonnage was down 6%.
“Great Lakes ports experienced a brief pause during this season due to a strike, while last season’s mild winter created lower demand for salt during 2024,” port director Dean Haen said in a news release. “Despite being slightly down in tonnage this year, it was a good year for shipping, and we’re pleased with how the season ended. We’re proud, along with our private sector partners, to be critical link in a resilient supply chain that supports the regional and national economies.”
Cement was up 21% while liquid asphalt increased 10% from 2023. Tonnage of constructed aluminum components doubled and foreign exports of petroleum products, including ethanol, showed steady growth, port leaders said.
