MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Shoppers dashed through the aisles of a Menasha grocery store Thursday to help support an area food pantry.
The 16th annual Race for the Hungry, sponsored by North Shore Bank, was held at the Menasha Piggly Wiggly to benefit St. Joseph’s Food Program.
Two teams equipped with decorated shopping carts and food pantry wish lists raced through the supermarket aisles, piling their carts high as they collected items for Menasha residents struggling with hunger. The first team to collect everything on their shopping list won a $100 gift card and the runner-up took home a $50 gift card.
All of the food collected during the race was donated to St. Joseph’s Food Program. The pantry also received a monetary donation from North Shore Bank.
Scott Schefe, director of operations at St. Joseph’s Food Program, said the food and financial support will make a big difference for those in need.
“You just fill up a cart like this, that’s probably going to go through a couple hundred families. The items that we collected right now are a variety, so each family gets a variety of different items. It’ll be a couple hundred families for sure that will get some food out of this. It’s awesome,” Schefe said.
This time of year is a difficult stretch for many food pantries, coming off the holiday season.
“The need is still there. A lot of times, Thanksgiving and Christmas, there’s a lot of support at those times, but January, February, March — this is when the donors start slowing down a little bit,” Schefe said. “So this is something that really helps support us right now. We’ll fill up some shelves and get some much-needed items to our clients.”
