NE WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WLUK) – Cold weather to start 2025 means some public outdoor ice rinks are starting to open up in Northeast Wisconsin.
The city of Kaukauna posted on Facebook Monday that the outdoor rink at Horseshoe Park is open, and Tuesday afternoon, two friends were out cutting some of the first lines through the fresh ice.
They were excited to see the post after last winter’s warm weather prevented many rinks from opening.
“It was definitely a happy moment. Just knowing that there’s another opportunity for us to go out and have fun,” said Kassidy Milanowski of Combined Locks.
“Get some exercise, fresh air, sunshine. It’s perfect,” her friend, Heather Cournoyer chimed in.
“When I first walked out here, the air just felt like ice skating air. Like, the weather was the perfect temperature and I just knew it was gonna be a good skate day,” said Milanowski.
Appleton’s Pierce Park pavilion is also now open for skating, and the rink at Howard Commons is open Thursdays through Sundays.
But the outdoor rinks in Green Bay, Allouez, and De Pere are all still in the process of being flooded.
De Pere Parks told FOX 11 they hope to have both the VFW and Legion park rinks open by the end of next week.
