GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Hundreds of charitable organizations statewide received grants Thursday from the Green Bay Packers Foundation.
$1.5 million was awarded to 398 Wisconsin nonprofits during the Foundation’s annual luncheon at Lambeau Field. Approximately $210,500 was given to 54 nonprofits in Brown County.
Wilson Jones, chairman of the Green Bay Packers Foundation, said it’s important to give back to the community that has always been there to support the Packers.
“If you think about the Packers organization, we’re community owned. For over 100 years, communities around the state have supported us, so it’s a way of honoring that commitment. It could be said that we might not be here in historic Lambeau Field or part of the great Packers organization if it wasn’t for all that great community support,” Jones said.
This year’s grant cycle focused on organizations that will direct the funds toward the need areas of arts and culture (143 grants), athletics (66 grants) and education (189 grants).
Jones said these grants make a big difference for nonprofits in need.
“Our grants kind of get in between the creases. Some organizations have large endowments and don’t need the type of funding that we have, but other organizations that are running sometimes on brat fries and pancake breakfasts — we can step in and help them,” he said.
One of this year’s grant recipients is the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers. Program Officer Stephanie Carpenter explained how the money will help them.
“I work at a letter press printing museum, and we preserve historic things for creative use today. So having funding that ensures that everybody has access to this equipment or this art form or this activity is so important, and so having that funding is really key,” she said.
Packers alumnus Dorsey Levens spoke during the awards ceremony. Additionally, the Green Bay Preble Concert Choir performed prior to the luncheon.
Since its inception in 1986, the Green Bay Packers Foundation has now distributed nearly $25.8 million for charitable purposes.
