APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The finishing touches are now complete, and the Appleton History Museum is ready to open.
From vintage appliances made by the Presto Products Company, to a basketball-trophy awarded to the 1924 Fox River Valley Conference Champions, the refurbished Appleton History Museum is designed to fascinate. Board Member Tom Miller says the 145 year old J.B. Courtney Company woolen mill is history in action.
“Taking the wool fibers, and making them into quilt batting. And I think most people in the valley here remember grandma’s quilts, and how they were made, and going to the Courtney Mill to make those,” said Tom Miller, Appleton Historical Society Board Member.
There’s a map room, a library featuring Appleton’s history, and a $1.5 million capital campaign. Mary Beth Nienhaus and Claudine and Jim Happel have contributed $200,000 in matching grants to help cover the cost.
“We’re hoping that if the community can match that, that’s going to go for the continued refurbishing of our new place here. And also for operating expenses,” said Mary Beth Nienhaus, Friend of Appleton Historical Society.
Another exhibit features Air Wisconsin, and its ties to Appleton and aviation. And the Lamson Preferred Cable Cash Carrier System was used at a department store in downtown Appleton. The device was considered a safe and efficient way to send money to one centralized location.
“I think everybody needs to know their history. Everybody needs to know where they come from. Everybody needs to embrace their culture, their heritage. I think it’s important for the community and it’s part of, it’s woven in our DNA, to know where we come from,” said Miller.
The grand opening is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20.
The Appleton History Museum is located at 231 W. Franklin St.
Admission is $5.
