(UW ATHLETICS) COLUMBUS, OHIO – Two goals from Lacey Eden helped the Wisconsin women’s hockey team complete a four-goal comeback to defeat the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-2, at the OSU Ice Rink Friday.
Wisconsin (13-0-0, 9-0-0 WCHA) trailed the Buckeyes (11-3-2, 6-3-2 WCHA) 2-0 early but scored two goals in the second and two in the third to secure the 4-2 victory. Laila Edwards assisted on three of the four goals on the night, including both of Eden’s goals and Casey O’Brien’s goal which tied the game at two. The Badgers now extend their win streak to 13.
The Badgers fell 2-0 in the first period, only the second time Wisconsin has fallen behind this season. Earlier this season, Wisconsin returned from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Gophers on Oct. 19.
The Badgers rallied back in the second period. Four minutes into the period, Edwards sent a long cross-ice pas to set up O’Brien on the breakaway. The Wisconsin co-captain passed it across the slot to Eden who one-timed the puck into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. Twelve minutes into the period, O’Brien found the equalizer. Vivian Jungels sent the puck toward the net and OSU netminder Amanda Thiele couldn’t stop the puck from getting straight to O’Brien to tap into the net. Wisconsin’s effort was enough to send the game into the intermission tied at two.
Just under three minutes into the third period, the Badgers took their first lead. Wisconsin found themselves 4-on-2 in the offensive zone and passed it between each other until Eden saw a gap to send the puck into the back of the Buckeyes’ net.
Wisconsin defended the 3-2 lead through the remainder of the period and the Buckeyes pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker to level the score. Caroline Harvey sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining to close the game 4-2.
